First Use: Setting Up Your CASABREWS CM5418
Before your first brew, flush the machine to prime the pump and remove any manufacturing residue. This is a one-time process.
- Remove the orange plug from the bottom of the water reservoir — this is a shipping seal and must be removed before use.
- Fill the reservoir with room-temperature water to the MAX line and install it.
- Plug in the machine and press the Power Button. Allow it to preheat until all indicator buttons are fully illuminated — ready.
- Place a cup under the steam wand and turn the Steam Knob to the steam/hot water position. Let hot water flow for 10 seconds, then return to off.
- Insert the portafilter without coffee grounds into the brew head. Press 1 CUP to run a flush cycle. Discard the water.
- Repeat 2–3 times until the machine runs quietly and water flows cleanly.
How to Brew Espresso with the CASABREWS CM5418
- Power on and wait for all buttons to illuminate steadily.
- Preheat the portafilter by running a flush cycle (no coffee) before your first shot of the day. This improves extraction temperature and shot consistency.
- Dose your coffee — 7–9g for a single shot, 13–15g for a double. Fill the basket evenly and level off the top.
- Tamp firmly and evenly — apply consistent downward pressure with a level tamp. Ensure coffee grounds reach the MAX line after tamping and wipe the portafilter rim clean.
- Lock the portafilter into the brew head — keep it level and rotate right to the center position.
- Ensure the Steam Knob is off before brewing.
- Place your cup on the drip tray under the portafilter.
- Press 1 CUP or 2 CUP to begin extraction. The machine will pre-infuse briefly at low pressure before the main extraction begins.
- Watch the pressure gauge — aim for the needle in the ideal/gray zone throughout extraction.
- Press the button again to stop, or let the machine complete the programmed volume.
- Serve immediately.
Pre-Infusion: What It Is and Why It Matters
The CM5418 features low-pressure pre-infusion — before the main 20-bar extraction begins, the machine briefly wets the coffee grounds at lower pressure. This saturates the puck evenly and reduces channeling, which produces a more balanced, flavorful shot.
You don't need to do anything to activate it — it runs automatically at the start of every extraction cycle. It's one of the features that separates the CM5418 from simpler entry-level machines.
Understanding the Pressure Gauge
The front-facing analog gauge shows extraction pressure in real time. Use it to diagnose and adjust your shots:
- Needle in the lower zone — under-pressure. Grind finer, increase dose, or tamp harder.
- Needle in the gray/ideal zone — correct extraction pressure. Your shot is pulling well.
- Needle in the upper/red zone — over-pressure. Grind is too fine, dose too high, or tamp too firm. Adjust one variable at a time.
Frothing Milk with the CM5418
- Always pull your espresso shot first. After steaming, the boiler needs to cool before brewing again.
- Press the Steam Button — it will flash while preheating. Wait until it stops flashing and illuminates steadily.
- Purge the wand — turn the steam knob to steam position and let residual water drain until only steam comes out, then turn back off.
- Fill your pitcher with cold milk (41°F / 5°C) — cold whole milk works best. Use a tall, slim stainless steel pitcher with at least 3.3% milk protein.
- Position the steam wand — arm at 12 o'clock, tip at 3 o'clock, just below the milk surface.
- Turn the steam knob on. You'll hear a soft hissing and see the milk swirling. Lower the pitcher gradually as foam builds.
- When the pitcher is too hot to hold for 3 seconds, milk is ready. Turn knob off and press Steam Button to exit steam mode.
- Wipe the steam wand immediately with a damp cloth, then purge briefly to clear any milk from inside.
Cleaning & Maintenance
After Every Use
- Remove portafilter, discard puck, rinse with warm water
- Wipe steam wand with damp cloth immediately after use
- Purge steam wand briefly to clear milk from inside
- Wipe exterior and empty drip tray
- Unplug after each use
Weekly Deep Clean
- Remove filters from portafilter and wash with warm soapy water
- If filters appear clogged, soak in boiling water for 10 minutes, then rinse
- If the steam nozzle tip is blocked, remove and clean with a pin
- Clean the water tank with mild detergent and rinse thoroughly
- Run a flush cycle with clean water through the brew head
Descaling
Descale every 1–3 months depending on water hardness and frequency of use. Use a food-safe descaling solution. Follow the full descaling procedure in your manual or on the CASABREWS support page.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Machine won't turn on
Check the power plug and outlet. Ensure the Power Button has been pressed and both shot buttons light up. If all buttons flash simultaneously, the flow meter or NTC may be faulty — contact CASABREWS support.
1 CUP and 2 CUP buttons alternate flashing, no coffee
Overheat protection is activated. Turn the steam knob to hot water position, run water from the wand for 20 seconds, return knob to off, and wait for all buttons to illuminate steadily before brewing.
Coffee runs out too slowly
Grind is too fine, dose is too high, or tamp is too firm. Adjust one variable at a time — go slightly coarser, reduce dose, or lighten your tamp. If the issue persists, soak the filter in boiling water for 10 minutes and run a descaling cycle.
Coffee runs through too quickly / tastes weak
Grind is too coarse, dose is too low, or tamp is too light. Machine may also not be fully preheated — always run a flush cycle before your first shot. Grind finer or increase dose slightly.
No steam / weak steam
Check that the water tank is full. If the steam nozzle tip is clogged with milk residue, remove and clear with a pin. Don't run steam for more than 3 continuous minutes — turn off for at least 1 minute before resuming.
Milk won't froth properly
Use cold whole milk (41°F / 5°C) with at least 3.3% milk protein. Use a tall, slim stainless steel pitcher — wide or shallow containers don't froth well. Ensure the steam tip is just below the surface, not submerged deeply.
Water pooling under the machine
Either the water tank isn't seated correctly or the drip tray is full. Remove and reinstall the tank, and empty the drip tray.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I set up the CASABREWS CM5418 for the first time?
Remove the orange plug from the bottom of the water reservoir — this is a shipping seal. Fill the tank, power on, and run 2–3 flush cycles through the brew head and steam wand without coffee to prime the pump and clean the system.
What is pre-infusion on the CM5418?
Pre-infusion is an automatic low-pressure wetting phase that runs at the start of every extraction. It saturates the coffee grounds evenly before the full 20-bar pressure engages, reducing channeling and producing a more balanced shot. It runs automatically — no action required.
Why are my shot buttons flashing and the machine won't brew?
The machine is in overheat protection mode after steaming. Turn the steam knob to the hot water position and run water from the wand for 20 seconds, then return to off and wait for all buttons to illuminate steadily.
What grind size works best in the CM5418?
Fine to medium-fine — similar to table salt. The pressure gauge is your guide: the needle should sit in the ideal zone during extraction. If it drops too low, grind finer or increase your dose. If it rises too high, go coarser.
How much coffee should I use in the CM5418?
7–9g for a single shot, 13–15g for a double. Weigh your dose for consistent results — even small variations in dose affect extraction pressure and shot quality.
Is the CASABREWS CM5418 dishwasher safe?
No — all parts must be hand washed with warm water and mild dish soap. Dishwasher use will damage seals, filters, and the machine's finish.
How is the CM5418 different from the CASABREWS 3700?
The CM5418 has a slightly smaller water tank (34 oz vs 43.9 oz), a more compact footprint, and adds low-pressure pre-infusion for improved extraction consistency. Both use the same 20-bar pump, 1350W boiler, and 51mm portafilter. The CM5418 is the better choice for smaller kitchens or office use.
