First Use: Setting Up Your Presso Smartshot
Before pulling your first shot, rinse the machine through with hot water to remove any manufacturing residue and preheat the brewing components. This step significantly improves extraction temperature on early shots.
- Fill the cylinder with freshly boiled water to the fill line
- Lock the portafilter into the machine without adding coffee (turn left to lock)
- Raise both lever arms slowly, then press down to push water through the empty basket
- Discard the rinse water
- Repeat once more — your machine is now preheated and ready to brew
How to Brew Espresso with the Presso Smartshot
The Presso Smartshot is designed to make great espresso without requiring precise barista technique. The pressurized Smartshot basket handles the extraction balancing for you — your job is to follow the steps consistently.
- Grind your coffee to a medium-fine consistency (see grind guide below). Dose approximately 12–13g into the portafilter basket.
- Tamp lightly — the Smartshot basket doesn't require a firm tamp. A gentle, level press with the included spoon/tamper is enough.
- Lock the portafilter into the machine by turning it to the left until firmly seated.
- Boil fresh water and fill the cylinder to the indicated fill line. Use water just off the boil (around 200°F / 93°C).
- Place your cup under the spout. Use the spout splitter for two cups.
- Slowly raise both lever arms together until they reach the top. You'll feel slight resistance as the springs engage.
- Press both arms down together smoothly and steadily. Don't rush — the downstroke should take about 3 seconds. The arms will lock into position at the bottom.
- Wait approximately 30 seconds for the coffee to fully extract.
- Remove the portafilter by turning it to the right, knock out the spent puck, and rinse.
Grind Size Guide for the Presso Smartshot
The Smartshot's pressurized basket gives you more flexibility than a traditional espresso basket — you don't need to dial in to a precise espresso grind. That said, grind size still affects your shot significantly.
Recommended range: Medium-fine to fine. Coarser than traditional espresso but finer than pour-over or drip.
- Pre-ground espresso coffee — works well out of the bag. Fill the basket completely and tamp firmly for best results.
- Freshly ground (burr grinder) — aim for a medium-fine setting. The Smartshot basket performs well with a range of grind sizes, so minor variation won't ruin the shot.
- Too coarse — shot will run fast, taste weak and watery. Fill the basket fully and tamp harder to compensate.
- Too fine — arms will be very difficult to press down. Go one step coarser on your grinder.
Making Lattes and Cappuccinos
The Presso Smartshot doesn't include a built-in steam wand, but it pairs well with a handheld milk frother to make lattes, cappuccinos, and flat whites at home.
- Pull your espresso shot as normal
- Heat milk in a small saucepan or microwave to around 150°F (65°C) — hot but not boiling
- Froth with a handheld frother for 20–30 seconds until microfoam forms
- Pour frothed milk over your espresso shot

Cleaning & Maintenance
After Every Use
- Remove the portafilter, knock out the spent coffee puck
- Rinse the portafilter basket under running water
- Run a small amount of clean water through the machine body by raising and pressing the arms without coffee loaded
- Wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth
Weekly Deep Clean
- Lock the portafilter in without coffee
- Run warm soapy water through the machine by pulling a normal shot cycle
- Follow with two rinse cycles using clean water
- Remove the black silicone seal from the portafilter — wash both sides with soapy water, rinse, and dry before replacing
Dishwasher Safe Parts
The stainless steel basket and black silicone seal are dishwasher safe. The portafilter body (wood handle) and the machine body are not dishwasher safe.
Descaling
If you live in an area with hard water, descale every 2–3 months. ROK provides a full descaling guide on their support page — see the resources section below.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Arms are very hard to press down
Your grind is too fine, your dose is too high, or both. Go one step coarser on your grinder, or reduce your dose slightly. The arms should press down with firm but manageable pressure.
Shot tastes weak or watery
Grind is too coarse or dose is too low. Try grinding finer, filling the basket completely, and tamping more firmly. Also ensure you're preheating the machine before brewing.
Plunger doesn't go all the way down
This is usually caused by mineral buildup or friction on the O-ring. Apply a very small amount of olive oil or food-safe margarine to the inner wall of the cylinder using your finger. Raise and lower the arms several times to distribute, then wipe off any excess. This is a known fix from the ROK support community.
Portafilter handle is loosening during use
This indicates the black silicone seal needs cleaning. Remove the seal and clean both sides with soapy water. Also clean the seating area inside the machine body. Rinse thoroughly, dry, and replace.
Machine makes a squeaking or clicking noise
Normal for the Presso Smartshot — the sound comes from the spring mechanism and metal parts moving under compression. If it bothers you, a small amount of food-safe lubricant on the spring joints reduces the noise. See ROK's lubrication video in the resources below.
Little to no crema
Three likely causes: stale coffee beans (buy fresh, roasted within 4 weeks), grind too coarse, or insufficient preheating. Try fresher beans first — crema production is highly dependent on CO2 content, which depletes as coffee ages.
Coffee stains on the base
Wipe the base after every use. If stains have set, clean with a damp cloth and mild dish soap. ROK sells a silicone mat that sits on the base and prevents staining — available on their website.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the ROK Presso Smartshot require electricity?
No — the Presso Smartshot is completely manual and requires no electricity. You provide the hot water and the mechanical pressure through the lever arms. It works anywhere you can boil water, including travel and camping.
What grind size should I use in the Presso Smartshot?
Medium-fine to fine works best. The Smartshot's pressurized basket is more forgiving than a traditional espresso basket — it works with a range of grind sizes including pre-ground espresso coffee from the supermarket. For best results with freshly ground beans, aim for a medium-fine setting and adjust based on how easily the arms press down.
Can I use pre-ground coffee in the Presso Smartshot?
Yes — the pressurized Smartshot basket is specifically designed to work with pre-ground coffee without precise dialing in. Fill the basket completely, tamp firmly, and wait 20 seconds after raising the arms before pressing down for best results.
Is the ROK Presso Smartshot dishwasher safe?
The stainless steel basket and black silicone seal are dishwasher safe. The machine body and the wood-handled portafilter are not — hand wash only.
What portafilter size does the Presso Smartshot use?
The Presso Smartshot uses a 51mm portafilter with ROK's proprietary locking mechanism. Standard 51mm portafilters from other brands are not compatible. Replacement portafilters and baskets are available through ROK's website.
How do I get more crema from my Presso Smartshot?
Use freshly roasted beans (within 4 weeks of roast date), preheat the machine before brewing, and ensure your grind is fine enough. The Smartshot basket is designed to produce crema — if crema is absent, stale coffee is usually the cause.
Where can I find replacement parts for the Presso Smartshot?
Replacement parts including service kits, O-rings, and portafilter baskets are available directly from ROK's official website.
How does the Presso Smartshot compare to the ROK EspressoGC?
The Presso Smartshot uses a pressurized basket designed for ease of use — no barista skills or precise dialing in required. The EspressoGC uses a traditional non-pressurized basket for users who want more control and are willing to dial in grind and technique for a higher extraction ceiling. The Smartshot is the better starting point for most home users.
